Rastus - Welsh Mountain Grade A, gray pony. Cody (same breeding and chestnut) and Rastus came to us through the drought in early 2007. I handled both for 6 months (tie-up, floating, hoof trimming, grooming, worming etc), then had them Gelded and Cody went off to his real home and Rastus stayed with us. My Grandson, Domanic often leads Rastus around and brushes him. Lovely to see a 2 and a half yr old working with a pony so confidently. |

28/8/10 - I fully tacked up Rastus and led him from Cappy around the lane, lake and aqua duct today. he led quite well with only 2 times of running around the front of Cappy under his neck. Some times he slots in behind Cappy for single file through tight spots but sometimes he goes through tees or down embankments to stay beside him so we need to keep working on his leading position as he will spend a few years doing this with children on his back. We did a scary moment when the gate scared Cappy and he tried to take off leaving Rastus dragging behind and then wrapping the lead rope around his behind - Cappy thought about kicking him. I need to keep working on both of them until they lead together like old hands. I sat Corie on Rastus whilst he was cross tied and he accepted him very well considering he hasn't had any-one on his back since April this year.
7/8/10 - After the long break and healing girth galls, Rastus finally got to come out with us today. My grandson, Corey, brought him in from the paddock and gave him a brush. Pretty good as Corey is only 3 years old. I led Rastus from Cappy whilst we walked around the Lillyput lane lake. Before we have even left our property, Rastus had nipped Cappy on the back of the rump and nearly copped a kick so that set him up to be a bit nervous but all went well so am looking forward to some nice weather so we can start riding him again. |
2/4/10 - Easter break I finished with Rastus. He now happily goes along the road in company. I didn't get to ride him alone as he was taken out along tracks in hills and galled and I don't want the skin to break so he is now going back into the paddock to heal for the next couple of months.
16/3/10 - I started back on Rastus 4 days ago and tonight I rode him with the saddle on and Victor holding the lead rope. We only walked up and down the drive and around the front garden as this is so new to him and he puffs a little too hard for my liking. I do understand though as I am about 25% of his weight. Tomorrow night I will ride him around the arena if all goes well with timing. We are taking him on our Easter camp so my niece can ride him around as she is quite small.
12/2/10 - Rastus has had a little time off as my ankle stopped working for me again - old injury. Last night young Jess (former student) came up and drove him around the arena for me. They worked so well together that when we finished, Jess leaned across his back and Rastus was really good. Hopefully Jess will come out again on Sunday late afternoon and help me with him again.
27/1/10 - Rastus had the night off to relax.
26/1/10 - I put my stock saddle on Rastus and drove him around the lake. The saddle is so big it goes from his wither to his rump so I will need to source another saddle that is more suitable before I climb on board. He was a little scared of the saddle as would be expected, so we worked quietly and by the time we came home he was walking, halting and reigning back like a brilliant little pony should.
25/1/10 - Drove Rastus around the yard, arena and then around the quiet bush tracks around our house. He is quite a smart little fellow and is coming along like a little gentleman. I gave him a big wash when we had finished which he found interesting. Of course, he did go straight out to the paddock and rolled until he was rather dirty again.
24/1/10 - Responded really well today to the bit pressure so I drove him for 2 minutes in the yard with 2 small rein backs which he did very well for his first time.
23/1/10 - More work with Rastus and he is responding nicely to the bit with ever so slight pressure, of course he is only at the start so early days yet.
22/1/10 - Started 'mouthing' Rastus today and he was very accepting.
